UTI and Pregnancy

UTI is the most common medical complication of pregnancy because of hormonal changes that alter ureter tone and peristalsis and when uterine enlargement physically displaces the urinary tract. This leads to fluid stasis, increasing the likelihood of bacterial growth. Cystitis is an infection of the bladder and Pylelonephritis is an infection of the kidneys.

UTI’s are associated with preterm labor, low birth weight, hypertension, preeclampsia, and maternal anemia. Women with a history of UTIs, sickle cell trait, sickle cell anemia and diabetes are at increased risk.

Signs and Symptoms of a UTI
