Over-the-Counter Drugs During Pregnancy

A lot of moms wonder what is okay to take during pregnancy. Here is a quick list of common over-the-counter (OTC) drugs that are in most homes. Eventually I will post natural alternatives to these medications, but for now here is what is commonly asked about. The information was taken from Anne Frye’s Holistic Midwifery book:

~ Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is the best OTC drug during pregnancy if it is taken as recommended. It does tax the liver function and should be used only when necessary.

~ Ibuprofen should be entirely avoided during pregnancy because it can severely disrupt blood clotting and tax the kidneys.

~ Aspirin should be avoided and is associated with prolonged gestation, longer labor and increased blood loss at birth.

~ Antacids neutralize stomach acids, thus arresting digestion.

Remember, the medical community considers a drug innocent until proven guilty in regards to its effects during pregnancy.
